What to Look for in Your New Frames

Do you know how to find glasses frames that suit your features?

The glasses you choose will be a huge part of the first impression you make on people. They’re a great way to show off your personal sense of style, but fashion isn’t the only factor to take into consideration.

What Shape Is Your Face?

A face can’t literally be heart-shaped or square, but our features can give an impression of a particular shape. Here’s a quick overview of the four main face shapes:

  • Square faces have strong jawlines and foreheads, roughly equal in length and width.
  • Round faces have full cheeks, more rounded hairlines and chins, and are similar in length and width.
  • Oval faces are like round faces except thinner and longer.
  • Heart-shaped faces have narrow chins, wide cheeks and foreheads, and are sometimes topped off with a widow’s peak hairline.

A good way to figure out your face shape if you don’t know it is to look in the mirror, close one eye, and draw the outline of your face with a washable marker. The result should be close to one of the shapes described above.

Use Your Frames to Complement Your Face Shape

What’s so important about knowing the shape of your face when searching for the perfect frames? Some frames will be much more flattering than others. A pair of rectangular glasses on a square face will further emphasize the squareness, but rounder glasses can help to soften a lot of those angles. Likewise, a round or oval face will look better in rectangular glasses.

Frames Aren’t Just Shape

Aside from the shape of the frames, also consider the size and color. They shouldn’t be too small or too large for your face. This is true for kids as well as adults — maybe even more so. Kids will outgrow their glasses like they outgrow their clothes, and they’ll want glasses that fit properly and reflect their level of maturity.

If you have a cool skin tone, good colors to consider for your frames are dark tortoise, blue, jade, pink, magenta, plum, blue-gray, rose-brown, silver, or black. People with warmer skin tones tend to look better in frame colors like blond tortoise, warm blue, fire-engine red, off-white, coral, orange, peach, copper, gold, khaki, or camel.
